Sustainability Beyond the Jobsite

At DAVIS, we never lose sight of the impact construction has on our environment. We’re committed to building a greener, more sustainable, future for our community. But being environmentally conscious isn’t important just on our project sites – we’re setting a sustainable example at our headquarters in Rockville, MD too.

Corporate Compost

In addition to being recognized by Montgomery County for our recycling efforts, we recently introduced composting at our headquarters as part of our 2017 Corporate Sustainability Initiatives. We’ve proudly partnered with a local start-up business, The Compost Crew, for weekly removal and processing of compostable waste.

Throughout the office, all disposable plates, bowls, cups, lids, and utensils have been replaced with 100% renewable Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certified compostable products from Eco-Products®. In addition to these products, we’re also composting coffee pods, tea bags, and countless food waste including meat and dairy. Several 12-gallon bins are located throughout our building for convenient disposal of compostable waste.

Within the first week of implementing the program, we produced more than double our anticipated amount of diverted waste, totaling 80 pounds. And after 50 days we diverted nearly 800 pounds of waste from landfills. We expect our waste diversion to continue to grow throughout the year, as employees become accustomed to composting in favor of using traditional trash receptacles.

Employee Education

Our Corporate Knowledge Center recently hosted an internal class to educate our employees on the importance and benefits of composting both in the office and at home. The Compost Crew also offers home services to local areas and bagged, processed compost for purchase.

As the Compost Crew’s largest corporate partner, we hope that our dedication to environmental responsibility inspires other industry and community partners to take similar action. We’re able to divert as much as one-third of our solid waste that would traditionally be sent to landfills, turning it into nutrient-rich compost. Reducing our impact on the environment has always been a priority at DAVIS and it will continue to be on and off the jobsite.
