Project Brief

This beautiful rock sculpture, originally titled Marabar by American artist Elyn Zimmerman, was constructed for National Geographic Society's (NGS) headquarters in 1984. In 2019, however, plans were made to renovate NGS's HQ, meaning a new home was needed for Marabar. At the same time, American University was looking to update the space nearby the Kay Spiritual Life Center. That's where our team came in: swiftly yet delicately transferring all elements of Marabar from downtown DC to AU's campus. Once transferred, Zimmerman felt the space gardened a bit of a refresh to the original design of the piece. She altered the shape of the new pool and rock formations, bringing to life Sudama. Our team was able to use all the necessary equipment and methods to protect the sculpture and surrounding site features, ensuring Zimmerman's new vision was achieved.
