Arlington, VA 350,000-SF base building renovation OWNER:London and Leeds
ARCHITECT:Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill, LLP (SOM)
DURATION:16 Months Renovation to the Commonwealth Tower involved a complete facade replacement incorporating hand set stone, architectural precast concrete, and a curtainwall system with punch and ribbon window systems. In addition to a new mechanical penthouse and a two-story lobby with a glass bridge, three new floors were added to the structure to create a 15-story, 350,000-SF building. Due to load limitations on the adjoining street, an innovative approach was developed to mount the tower crane on the eighth floor through the upper floors of the building. The interior work included complete core and stair modifications with a new elevator, MEP, and life safety systems. Concurrent with this renovation, DAVIS completed an 115,000-SF interior build-out for the Chemical Manufacturers Association and a 5,000-SF interior build-out for International Space Brokers.
