Pope John Paul II Cultural Center

Washington, DC

97,000-SF base building and interior build-out

OWNER:

The Pope John Paul II Cultural Foundation, Inc.

ARCHITECT:

Leo A Daly

DURATION:

24 Months

This four-level building features a striking architectural look with many unusual high-end components.  The Center serves as an exhibition, assembly, and scholarly research facility that focuses on the message of peace, justice, love, and respect for all.  The museum features thousands of artifacts and numerous interactive exhibits.  The Center also houses the works of distinguished resident scholars who research and teach about the interaction of faith and culture.  Site work preparations and safety considerations were necessary to safeguard the heavy pedestrian traffic near the densely populated Catholic University and the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.  A 75,000 gallon granite-enclosed reflecting pool and a bronze sculpture are the highlights of the Center's main entrance.  The reflecting pool, a partial design-build project, is surrounded by natural stone and granite benches.
